Downer believes one of the most exciting things about vintage 2021 was the quality of the Pinot Noir, a reflection borne out in this deliciously pure release. From vines with an average age of 20-plus years, the fruit selection here can change from year to year, yet the quality never wavers. The 2021 was predominantly sourced from the Piccadilly Valley. Fermentation was in small batches in open fermenters and a touch less whole-bunch was included this year (25%). Maturation took place in both puncheons and barriques for 10 months (approximately 15% new).

Reviews

“Spicy, flinty, minerally pinot noir. Light weight, spreads nicely in the palate, soft, dark cherry fruited, a little dark chocolate, some twiggy woody notes and a bit of turned earth. Beautiful texture. Will stutter on that, beautiful. Delicious drinking.”
93 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
"The 2021 Pinot Noir from Murdoch Hill has got lovely intensity of red fruits in the mouth. This is spicy and a little exotic, with a splay of redcurrants, red apple skins, orange zest, white pepper, black tea, lavender and brine. Really good."
91 points, Erin Larkin, The Wine Advocate
"A bit reductive on the nose but with air you are greeted with aromas of sliced strawberries, hibiscus tea, nutmeg and sweet paprika. Medium-bodied with a steady core of red fruit wrapped around fine tannins. Pretty. Well structured and composed. Drink or hold. Screw cap."

“Medium-deep red-purple hue; it opens with some meaty reductive aromas overlying bold, ripe red-cherry fruit. Good fruit flavour in the mouth. Refreshing crispness and energising acidity. A bright, fruit-driven and engaging style of pinot noir. Succulent cherry-brandy notes at the core. Keen value here.”
