This stunning Chardonnay is produced from the more mineral-based Violette’s and Lucas’s blocks, planted in 2006 to four clones of Chardonnay–three Dijon and the Gingin clone. Half of Violette’s block is on a north-south orientation, and these vines contribute powerful fruit to the blend, while the other half faces east-west and is shaded by the tree line. Lucas’s block provides fruit with more subtle stone fruit and mineral depth. Both blocks are certified organic and sit on karri loam topsoil over clay and granite.
Each clone was picked and vinified separately. The fruit was pressed as whole bunches to French barriques (50% new) for fermentation and maturation for 11 months. The wine went through 50% malolactic conversion. From an exceptional year, Chris Davies has delivered an exceptional wine with intense aromas, ripe and fleshy fruit and striking depth, structure and complexity.

Reviews

“One of my fave chardonnays thanks to its pristine, pure line of acidity and of course, its detail. A hint of stone fruit with lots of lemony, zesty flavours, oak spice and texture via creamy lees giving a clotted cream character. Then the acidity jumps back in – high toned, zesty and bright, it’s minerally, stony even. Tangy, juicy, it’s a refreshing linear style, complex and precise.”
95 points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion
