This is our second allocation from Bouland’s recently acquired parcel in the lieu-dit Pré Jourdan, which sits on the Morgon-Fleurie border in the northeast corner of Morgon. Sitting on the south side of a small valley, its exposition looks northeast, facing the vineyard of Douby. Bouland farms a tiny parcel of 70-year-old vines, just enough to fill a single large cask (a youngish Rousseau foudre in this case). The soils here are predominantly granitic sand—although they run deeper than in Bellevue and Corcelette—providing Bouland with a fleshier and highly aromatic Morgon to add to the range. In Beaujolais terms, it is profoundly deep, rolling out in palate-staining layers of spice-infused blueberry and blackberry fruit suffused with more smoked meat and dark, slaty mineral notes. Yet, for all its power and mouthfilling texture, it has real nuance, mineral lift and verve.
