Benoît Moreau Chassagne-Monrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean 2022

Rising above the village itself, this outstanding 1er Cru will be well known to buyers of Paul Pillot. The Moreau family have farmed here for generations, and Benoît himself converted this site to organics. Specifically, this wine comes from a tiny tranche of 60-year-old vines in the northern section of the vineyard (near Les Vergers), where the soils are less marked by the red clay often typical of this cru. Instead, there is a strong presence of limestone, resulting in a deep yet mineral expression. Even in a potentially generous vintage like 2022, only one barrel was made, which is why it has not been reviewed (Benoît does not show it). A wine, then, for those in the know!
