The 1er blocks are across the road from the original Hoddles Creek Estate property. The 1er Chardonnay and Pinot Noir blocks were planted in 2001. The Chardonnay vines are planted on the crest of a hill facing east, and the clones are Bernard 95, 96 and 277. According to Franco, it’s always been a unique site; it gets picked two weeks later than all other Chardonnay on the property, which goes some way to explaining its ripeness and complexity. The fruit was picked by hand, destemmed, lightly crushed and pressed. It spent 12 months in barrel (25% new) in the cellar downstairs, followed by a winter in tank upstairs to settle naturally. The wine saw partial malolactic conversion (approximately 20-25%) and was bottled unfined and unfiltered. From a low-cropping year, Franco has crafted another beautifully balanced, savoury and refined Chardonnay—it’s just a pity there’s not more of it.

Reviews

“White peach, grapefruit, fennel, spicy cinnamon and arrowroot biscuit oak, almond, subtle struck match. Apple, fresh apricot, and citrus, a very firm and tight line of acidity – quite some zing here – though the intensity of flavour and length are outstanding. Some savoury lees work adding complexity and smoothness. Finishes flinty with lots of textural highlights, ginger and superb length. Wonderful.”
95+ points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
“Light straw colour; smoky snuffed candle aroma; waxy/lees notes. Similar on palate, with savouriness and texture, a chalky feel and very dry finish which has an impression of tension.”
92 points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review
"The piquant 2022 Chardonnay 1er Yarra Valley is young and tight as it delivers preserved lemon, citron tart and pith aromas, with a solid backing of French oak. There's nice tension with a fresh acid drive on the palate, revealing more citrus and kaffir lime leaf flavors in line with that tighter, angular style. It finishes with solid length and will no doubt build in bottle."
93 points, Angus Hughson, Vinous
“In 2003, a high-altitude estate block of pinot noir was grafted to French chardonnay clones 95, 96 and 277. The result is a decidedly complex wine with a long palate balanced by crisp acidity, the volume of oak on the quiet side. Will richly repay patience.”
96 points, James Halliday, The Wine Companion
