This ultra-rare wine, named after François’ grandfather, was produced exclusively from the oldest vines in the Clos de Vougeot, planted in 1910; the same vines that gifted the vast majority of the fruit for the Vieilles Vignes. The BIG difference here is that only the first bunch on the first shoot of each vine was harvested and added to the fermenter. These first bunches, being furthest from the apical bud (and closest to the trunk), are smaller, on less vigorous shoots, and produce intensely flavoured juice. It is therefore something completely unique, the essence of the Clos de Vougeot.

The first vintage of Hommage was produced in 2010 and was initially designed to be a one-off to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of this plot of vines. It was such a success that this is now released whenever the quality of the vintage allows. Only 900 bottles of the 2020 were produced in total. It isn’t cheap, but it is rare and it is always outstanding. We were lucky enough to taste this in Burgundy and wow, it’s exceptional juice.

Reviews

“The 2020 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru Hommage à Jean Morin is brilliant, and one of the real high points of the vintage in the Côte de Nuits. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of wild berries, blood orange, rose petals, exotic spices, peonies, incense and loamy soil, it's full-bodied, layered and muscular, with a deep and multidimensional core of fruit that's framed by rich, powdery tannins and lively acids. Seamless and complete, it's worth a special effort to seek out.” 95-97+ points
William Kelley, The Wine Advocate
Five-star wine. “900 bottles and some larger formats will be offered. Two barrels of the four are new. This made according to the usual selection principle, which means picking just the bunch nearest to the trunk of the vine, from the plots of centenarian vines. 75% whole bunch vinification. The style of the wine is “a bit more in the spirit of Musigny” suggests Francois Labet. A much darker colour and a hugely increased volume of fruit but even more elegance. Sensuality in extremis, some chocolate notes, almost excessive in all, though refreshed by the stem effect at the back. Could become extraordinary with a great deal of time but I almost prefer the natural balance of the Vieilles Vignes.” 96-98 points
Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
“The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Hommage à Jean Morin, a special selection of bunches within the old vines, the bunches the closest to the trunk. It contains around 60-70% whole bunch layered in the vat. It has a complex nose with mainly black fruit, that oyster shell influence once again, just a touch of black olive. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fine backbone, quite linear but it expands on the finish. The whole bunch is very nicely enmeshed here and there is real salinity on the finish. Excellent.” 95-97 points
