Schell has been making Grenache from this vineyard since 2005, but this is only the third year a pure Grenache has been made from this site. With frosts, cold and windy weather at flowering and a hot, dry and early vintage, 2020 was a challenging year in the Barossa, and delivered extremely low yields of stunning Grenache (just over 15 hl/ha). It’s cropped from the same vineyard as the Moppa Shiraz, and similarly this was hand-harvested and wild-fermented (with 40% whole bunches) in open fermenters. The must was gently pumped over during the early phases of fermentation, with pigeage and treading throughout. It was pressed after 10 days to seasoned, large-format French oak.

Reviews

"There’s a sense of ripeness and dark, powerful fruit in play here. Aromas of blueberries and red plums are framed in forest wood and some earthy tones. The palate has a very pure raspberry and red-plum core with smoothly layered tannins building long and holding fresh. Drink or hold. Screw cap."

"The memory is hazy in Moppa in the northwest of the Barossa Valley. The vineyard was planted sometime in the 1940s or 1950s and managed organically for the past 40 years. It's all red plum and cherry fruit with a splash of raspberry coulis, along with hints of spice, ginger cake, earth and stone. It's concentrated but 40% whole bunches in the ferment opens the wine up beautifully, highlighting the crunchy, pure fruit, fine sandy tannin and savoury palate shape. Wonderful drinking."

“Pure, aromatic fruit aromas. Fresh and punchy. Pomegranate jewels, puckering persimmon-like tannins. Juicy, mouth-coating. Exhilarating expression. The combination of sweet cherry and plum with a nice savoury edge works beautifully. There’s good length, too.”
