Made from a small 1.1 hectare site planted to clone 95 Chardonnay, this vineyard is prized for producing racy, crunchy Chardonnay at low baume levels. Planted in 2004 to Clone 95 Chardonnay with a plant density of 2300 vines per hectare, this specially selected parcel of soil is on the crown of a gentle hill, with a slight aspect to the east. The block is extremely gravelly with a very high content of granite and possesses an underlying stony-clay base at a depth of around one metre.
Whole-bunch pressed to tank then moved to French oak barriques for natural fermentation, the high natural acidity and low baumé levels inherent to Clone 95 requires the use of malolactic fermentation to help reduce acidity, building texture and complexity through the palate.
Aged for 10 months in barrel, the 2019 vintage shines through and has produced a wine of superb intensity and drive. Lifted acacia and preserved lemon aromas lead to a palate that is superbly vibrant and crystalline. The Block 6 has the same winemaking and ageing as the Block 5 but is markedly different—more racy and linear. A Puligny to the other Block 5’s Chassagne!
