Voyager Estate’s superb Chardonnay has all the presence, elegance and purity of fruit that we have come to expect from this renowned producer. In particular, it reflects the cooler climate of the Wallcliffe sub-region and, more precisely, the Stevens Valley—arguably Margaret River’s finest Chardonnay zone. The area is characterised by gentle slopes of red/brown gravelly soils, with a stony/clay subsoil. Influenced by cooling breezes from the nearby Indian Ocean, it’s a superb microclimate for Chardonnay, and the Voyager team pulls out all the stops to deliver on this promise.

The vineyard is planted to nine different clones of Chardonnay with each bringing different nuances to the wine. The main clones are: the well-known Gin Gin clone, which brings power and concentration; and the Bernard Clones 95, 96 and 76, which offer a more restrained flavour profile and contribute wonderful texture, finesse and freshness.

Eight separate blocks were hand-harvested, cooled overnight, then whole-bunch pressed and transferred to French oak (38% new) for natural fermentation. Selected parcels underwent malolactic fermentation and the wine was aged for nine months in oak barriques, undergoing regular bâtonnage, before final blending and bottling in January 2021.

Voyager Estate Chardonnay 2020

Reviews

"A combination of 7 vineyard blocks, utilising clones 95, 96, 76 and Gingin. All fermented wild in French oak (36% new). Some parcels (Dijon clones) underwent mlf to mitigate the acidity. Matured for 9 months in barrique, regular bâtonnage. The 2020 vintage in Margaret River has produced a tranche of effortless wines; powerful, ripe and with bright acidity. As ever, this is classy to the max – creamy, taut, restrained, nutty and super-fresh; all of it wrapped in a web of saline acidity and glossy phenolics."
94 points, Erin Larkin, winecompanion.com.au
“There’s no shortage of flavour in 2020 Margaret River Chardonnay. White nectarine, pear, vanilla and floral notes, cinnamon and cedar oak, not overt, but present. Good flavour, pear and ripe grapefruit, vanilla spice oak, a little creamy nougat, gentle chalky texture, and bright acidity, distinct grapefruit pith and slightly hard acidity on a pretty long finish. Needs a little more time to integrate, but very good.”
93 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
“Medium-full yellow colour, bright and shiny, the bouquet strongly nutty, toasted nuts as well as fresh, some butterscotch touches, the oak just a little obvious. Rich in the mouth and generously proportioned, with lovely rounded shape and supple mouth-feel. Roasted hazelnut emerging. A touch of well-judged tannin on the aftertaste adds refreshing dryness and texture. (Now certified organic with ACO)”
92 points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review
“Well composed and seductive white peach, apricot, flinty, light marzipan flavours, fine loose-knit chalky textures, superb mid-palate creaminess and fresh long indelible acidity. Classic and beautifully balanced with superb flavour definition, richness of flavour and mineral freshness.”
