On the western hills above Neive, Albesani is one of the shining stars of Barbaresco. In his Barbaresco MGA, Masnaghetti writes that here, “the combination of soil, stature and exposure creates one of the greatest vineyards of the Langhe”. So, perhaps it won’t be a surprise that of the three Barbaresco parcels, Massolino chose to bottle its first single-vineyard wine from this site. As Franco Massolino explains, “From the very first moment this wine began to ferment, we knew we were dealing with a superb expression of Nebbiolo.” Of its two hectares in Albesani, Massolino used only 0.6 hectares of vines for this bottling. The vines were planted 50 years ago at 260 metres above sea level on soils of limestone, clay and marl with a southwest exposure.

The winemaking mirrors that of the Barbaresco. As reflected in the price, this is a big step up from the blend, a gorgeous, supple Barbaresco with alluring, lifted scents of red fruit, dried flower and sweet tobacco leading to a classically shaped palate of exciting depth, freshness and superb length.

Massolino Barbaresco Albesani 2019

Reviews

"A tight and concentrated Barbaresco with racy strawberries, orange zest and hints of sweet spices. Medium to full body with tightly wound tannins that slowly build on the palate to a crescendo. Long, tight but also seamless tannins. Pretty eclectic in style showing clarity, fine austerity and just a hint of plushness. Drink or hold."

“The 2019 Barbaresco Albesani captures all the breadth and resonance that is such a signature of this famous hillside site in Neive. Red/purplish fruit, spice, rose petal, lavender, menthol and licorice build with a bit of time in the glass. Bright acids and lively tannins add energy to this super-classic, inviting Barbaresco from Massolino. The 2019 is a dream, not to mention a superb debut.”

“Massolino has added a few terrific new Barbarescos to its lineup. The 2019 Barbaresco Albesani is one of these. With fruit from a 0.6-hectare growing site at a warm 230 meters in elevation, the wine shows broad knitting and dark fruit nuances of blackcurrant and cherry. There is spice, toast and mineral at the back.”
94 points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate
“The nose is a stunning concentration of fruit, cherry and cinnamon, with fresh violet, balsamic depth and a touch of tar. Reserved on the palate, it's dense, polished, concentrated and savoury. Tannins and acidity are perfectly woven with cherry and pomegranate fruit, with a savoury liquorice finish. As is often the case with the top wines, this is great now but will keep going on strong for decades.”
