The Margheria vineyard is one of Serralunga’s most important and illustrious sites. The Massolino family bought their first parcel here in 1964, and the remainder came online during the ’70s. The current holding is 1.5 hectares. Sitting at 280 metres above sea level, Margheria is a very chalky vineyard with a good percentage of sand (which brings elegance), while the high calcium carbonate content brings vibrant, mineral energy to the natural depth of Serralunga.

As with all three 2019 Crus, the Margheria was fermented in large, conical oak fermenters and had around two weeks on skins. It was then aged in botti for 30 months before bottling, and then remained in bottle for a further year before release. This is a benchmark release for this wine—a superb, powerful and incredibly mineral Margheria. As always, it’s pretty and perfumed and yet with plenty of structure as well. A truly great release for this wine.

Reviews

“The 2019 Barolo Margheria is a classic Serralunga Barolo. Deep, savory and wonderfully complex, the Margheria offers up a compelling mix of red/purplish fruit, sage, menthol, licorice, dried flowers, graphite and melted road tar. Muscular tannins wrap it all together. The 2019 is seriously impressive.”
96 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous
“Rich, cherry, liquorice root, rose petal, a little clay and almond. Full-bodied, but such a lovely carriage and weight, succulent, so much flesh to tannin, kind of meaty and earthy, with some sage and dried herb, and a long charcoal laced finish. It has some sap and energy too, and a spicy aftertaste. I like the ‘mineral’ component of this wine too, though I feel Parafada has the edge on it in 2019, though of course they are both equally valid and different expressions of Serralunga.” 95+ points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
