Drawn from a small parcel (0.47 hectares) of vines replanted in 1990, the first domaine bottling of this wine dates back to 1970. The vines are in the Gémeaux lieu-dit that borders Cherbaudes, and En la Chapelle, which in turn borders En Griotte. The soils here are particularly poor and rocky, and typically produce a wine of great minerality and longevity. Jasper Morris notes that this cuvée is now seeing a “longer cuvaison but with less extraction and lower temperatures”. It’s all the better for it.

Domaine Ponsot Grand Cru Chapelle-Chambertin 2019

Reviews

“The Chapelle-Chambertin is permitted a slightly longer vinification at slightly lower temperatures than the other re wines. It is the first to be picked and the last to be decanted out of the fermentation vats. It has paid dividends this year. The colour offers a wealth of exuberant deep purple. The nose too is joyous, making an immediate statement of ripe but delightful deep raspberry and succulent strawberry fruit. There is a wealth of fruit right across the palate then this same strong mineral acidity to finish. The fruit seems to darken (in a good way) in the glass. This is going to be pretty special.” 94-97 points

“According to winemaker, Alexandre Abel, the young vines in this domaine-owned parcel of Chapelle-Chambertin require a very precise organisation, so pickers will go through the vineyard four times to ensure ripeness. The work is paying off, for this is marvellous, with a superbly aromatic rose petal and red fruit nose, and a piercingly sweet character to the fruit on the palate. The wine is extraordinarily supple and elegant, but has the substance to continue to age for decades.”
94 points, Charles Curtis MW, Decanter
“Opening in the glass with aromas of cherries, strawberries and raspberries mingled with peonies and licorice, Ponsot's 2019 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru is full-bodied, layered and velvety, with a broad attack that segues into a deep, concentrated mid-palate framed by ripe tannins and lively acids. This has turned out very well indeed.”
