Biodynamic. This cuvée is not only a memorable expression of Riesling, but it is also one of the great white wines of France. The fruit comes from five plots of 60-plus-year-old vines at the heart of the Schlossberg slope, where the sun exposure and granitic, mineral-rich soils beget a particularly deep, layered and profound dry Riesling.

The wine takes its name from the day of Sainte Catherine, which falls on 25th November. Early vintages were picked on or around that date, drawing their opulence and complexity from Alsace’s late autumn. Today, it can be picked as much as one month earlier. However, it remains the most extraordinary dry Riesling of the domaine. The winemaking is identical to the Schlossberg, but the terroir manifests with more intensity, focused concentration and mineral resonance. The wine was raised for 14 months in Weinbach’s old oval casks. The cream always rises to the top.

Weinbach Alsace Grand Cru Schlossberg Cuvée Sainte Catherine Riesling 2022

Reviews

“Still extremely youthful on the nose, which is not something you expect from such a warm and dry vintage, but that is typical for the greatest 2022 wines. This astonishing dry riesling starts off very minerally, but that doesn’t prepare you for the way its stony profundity expands and expands as it climbs into the sky like a rocket ascending. And somehow, all this feels so effortless, so delicate and so breathtakingly precise.”

“The 2022 Riesling Cuvée Ste. Catherine Schlossberg Grand Cru opens with a spray of ripe Amalfi lemon zest, ripe and so fresh, imbued with a touch of smoke. Ripe, juicy, mouth-watering Amalfi and Meyer lemon are the stars on the clean-cut, taut and stony palate, and their juiciness and aroma make the mouth water. It displays vivid, concentrated juiciness and immense zestiness. The mouth-coating, zesty finish lasts and lasts. Where the other wines have pith, this has zest.”
