With Matt Holmes at the tiller, Bannockburn’s Riesling is firing on all cylinders. The 2022 includes material from a younger plot of Riesling (planted in 2015), but the lion’s share of the fruit remains drawn from Bannockburn’s ungrafted 1976 plantings in the Olive Tree Hill vineyard.

The fruit was picked in late March in excellent condition with slightly lower than average yields, whole-bunch-pressed and settled overnight before being racked to tank for a cold, natural ferment. As with the last couple of vintages, there were no additions other than a touch of sulphur.

Reviews

“Buy this. Drink it. It’s a beautiful wine, full of flavour and interest. Apple skins and citrus, pear and slate, with a gentle overtone of woodsmoke and, even, musk. The individual flavours are little matter though; it’s the stony texture, the combination of juiciness and dryness, the way it engages you. It’s fantastic.”
94 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front
“Pale yellow in the glass. Grapefruit and oyster-shell aromatics. Juicy and quite intense on the tongue with tropical fruits, lime zest and sea brine notes all clamouring for attention. Controlling it well is a bright crunch of acidity that sends it long to the finish where a savoury intrigue lingers. A delightful wine.”
