From a south-facing block on the property that was planted in 2001, this particular parcel ripens a touch later than the rest of the Pinot blocks on the home property. The quality and power of the 2021 vintage allowed for some whole-bunch inclusion (25%), adding structure to the wine. It spent 12 months in barrel (25% new) in the downstairs cellar followed by a winter in tank upstairs to naturally settle before it was bottled (unfined and unfiltered).

It’s both a pure and complex Pinot, with alluring aromas of bright red fruit, spice, purple florals and some earthy undertones. The palate is full and generous, but with all the elegance and finesse you expect from great Pinot Noir. Tight, fine-grained tannins, balanced acidity and complex length close out a very impressive wine.

Reviews

“Hoddles Creek Pinot is one of the few Australian Pinots I buy with some regularity, so make of that what you will. It’s so calm and seductive, and while it shows a little more creamy spicy biscuit oak than usual, or so I think, it’s nothing overt. Aside that, red cherry and red berries, spice, mint and floral top notes, with silky fine tannin, though they offer a distinct ‘mineral’ character, with a crushed stone sort of thing, and some more earthy/savoury flavours. Not at all sweet, maybe even a little bony, though the red fruit is ample. The finish is very long, a tight tannin dusting as it goes. Probably the best vintage of 1er Pinot since 2015.”
96 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
"The scented bouquet has all the marks of the vintage: warm spices, red flowers, plum and forest floor. The silky, supple palate sweeps all that has gone before into an intense, pulsating blaze of dark cherry, savoury spices and fine-strung tannins."
97 points, James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion 2024
