Diam. Leroux’s estate Bâtard comes from a brilliantly located 0.16-hectare plot of 40-year-old vines, right next to the Hospices de Beaune’s parcel and directly across the road from DRC’s parcel of Le Montrachet. It falls on the Chassagne side of the vineyard, for what it’s worth (not much, to be frank). Leroux gained full control of the vineyard management of this site in 2016. He has recently had the original stone entrance restored here, so it’s quite easy to find his plot if you’re ever driving along the boundary between Bâtard and Le Montrachet. It’s bottled only in magnum; there was only 300 litres made this year, and it fermented and aged in a single, used barrel.

Reviews

“A fresh pale colour. Quite a discreet bouquet. 1 x 300 litre barrel, half the usual volume and a third of what is allowed. Distinction though, as the fruit begins slowly to emerge. Very graceful, not the deepest on the market, a little lemon scent, correct acidity with a light mineral touch. This is a fine wine which should blossom with time.”
93-96 points, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
“This wine is among the high points in the Leroux portfolio in 2021. It avoids the rigours of the vintage to deliver a classic experience of Bâtard, with lush aromas of ripe apple, butter, and hazelnut accented by some smoky reductive notes and a hint of minerality. The feel on the palate is big for the vintage – ripe and round, with more richness than most, and a supple, silky side that brings balance to the lengthy finish.”
94 points, Charles Curtis MW, Decanter
“Leroux has a miniscule three hectoliters of this wine – in total. Not that his usual volume of six hectoliters is much more. I can only appreciate this wine all the more knowing how hard it is to craft tiny lots of wine. This is such an elegant Bâtard. The flavor spectrum favors savory to fruit tones with lees, bread crumbs and white pepper spice. Though it shows dense material in the mid-palate, there is a linear, structured aspect to it that demands time to age.”
