Les Santenots is one of the top 1er Cru sites of Volnay. Here, across the Meursault border, the clay-rich soils give wines of perfumed depth and silken structure. To give you some idea of the site’s quality, many years ago we asked Leroux if there was one vineyard in Volnay he would like to work with, and he replied Santenots without hesitation, mentioning that he buys the wine of this vineyard from his friend Dominique Lafon each year. Of course, he then went on to speak about Rugiens and Caillerets (the most revered sites of the village—and vineyards that he was finally able to access in 2018). Leroux’s Santenots is drawn from one hectare of estate-owned 70-year-old vines, worked organically. By Volnay standards, Leroux harvested a pretty decent crop in 2021, and 35% whole bunches were used in the ferment. A gorgeous, floral-scented Santenots this year.
