Organic. Another feather in the cap of this grape’s original gangsters, Feri Maris sits at the pinnacle of Quealy’s Pinot Grigio portfolio. This singe-block Grigio is sourced from the estate’s oldest vines (planted in 1996) in the Balnarring vineyard. Here, the mature, dry-grown vines, shallow clay soils and restricted volume are some of the keys to the wine’s expressive character. Then there is the Balnarring climate, which brings flavour early, thus allowing Quealy to pick with freshness in mind.
The grapes were handpicked, then gently whole-bunch pressed (only 580 litres per tonne) so only the finest delicate juice was expressed. It was settled overnight, then racked and allowed to naturally ferment in a mixture of barrels (30% total, 50% of which were new) and stainless steel (70%). The wine sat on gross lees with no bâtonnage for four months to chase down a steely and more mineral profile. Made without any additions or filtration.

Reviews

“Pale lemon yellow, bright, and glinting through the glass. Pear and almond meal aromas. Palate is bright and vibrant, apple and pear fruits, hints of lime blossom and an almond pastry note that adds depth. Good length and ample freshening acidity to the long finish.”
93 points, Stuart Knox, The Real Review
This is a really good example of how Pinot Grigio can be multi-layered and complex, given the right handling in vineyard and winery. Super-fresh, tangy and grapey aromas, with a crunchy, green-berry-popping liveliness in the mouth and a deliciously thirst-quenching touch of cardoon and brine on the finish.
17 points, Max Allen, Jancis Robinson.com
“A finely tuned, racy yet lightly textural offering sitting perfectly within the Australian grigio spectrum. Sliced pears and honey, lemon juice and ginger spice, crunchy nashi pear and lively acidity throughout.”
95 points, Jane Faulkner, The Wine Companion
“Pear with nutmeg and sesame. The texture is beautiful, bitter, with a grip, crunch and weight, it’s a sweet-umami combination, but not oily or sickly, savoury mushroom/truffle, orange biscuit and salt and something sort of meaty towards the finish. Something you can sink your teeth into, bite onto. Mind your lip. Something between Grigio and Gris.”
