The Montersino Cru is located at the southern tip of Barbaresco, close to Treiso, at 320 metres above sea level. The Rocca’s 0.42-hectare parcel is within the highest and coolest area of Barbaresco and is one of the region’s most elevated plots. The south-facing vines were planted in 1998 by Angelo Rocca and are rooted on very poor clay and limestone slopes with thin layers of sandstone. The sandstone brings finesse, as does the altitude. Daniela Rocca has pointed out that this soil type (locally called Formazioni di Lequio) resembles Barolo’s Monforte and some of the chalky soils found in Serralunga.

Albino Rocca Barbaresco Montersino 2019

Reviews

“Underbrush, dark cherry and hazelnut aromas form the nose along with a pretty whiff of blue flower. Firmly structured, the savory palate offers ripe Morello cherry, ground clove and licorice framed in tightly knit, fine-grained tannins. Give it a few more years to fully unwind. Drink 2027–2034.”
95 points, Kerin O’Keefe, Wine Enthusiast
“The 2019 Barbaresco Montersino marries elegance with power. Sweet wild cherry, tobacco, cedar, mint, spice and dried flowers open first, followed by a kick of Nebbiolo acids and tannin that make themselves felt on the mid-palate and finish. Complex and beguiling, the Montersino has a lot to say in 2019. There’s real depth here, not to mention tons of character.”
