Although it was purchased in 2003, Quealy’s home vineyard was initially planted in 1982, making this Balnarring vineyard one of Mornington’s oldest Pinot Noir sites. From that era just 17 rows of MV6 Pinot Noir remain, gifting their old-vine fruit to Quealy’s flagship Pinot Noir. The entire vineyard is located on a gentle north-facing slope, on shallow loams over clay. From 2019 these vines have been certified organic.

The 2019 was harvested on the 4th of March, entirely destemmed (with zero sulphur added) and wild-fermented in small, one-tonne pots. Only the free-run wine was settled and racked to 300-litre barriques (33% new) with the balance matured in equal proportions of one-year-old and two-year-old wood.

Reviews

"The most structured of the Quealy pinot noirs. Full bodied, good concentration, with ripe, plush tannins and sweet, spicy fruit. Savoury notes shine through with hazelnut skins, black olives, an earthiness and iodine. It leaves an impression."
95 points, Jane Faulkner, Wine Companion
"Truffle scents on raspberry liquorice, cherry, dark chocolate and some smoky, paprika spice. Supple texture shifts a gear with a web of dark, chewy tannins, bright acidity keeps it perky and the wine drives long to a fine, amaro-like finish. Very charming, savoury focused pinot noir."
94 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
"Medium ruby-red colour, bright and clear throughout the glass. Red cherries, rosemary and sage aromatics. Medium-weighted, a fine acid line holds everything up with a brightness of cherry fruit and sweet herbal notes. Great length and a drive of powdery tannins accentuates the focus. There's a delicacy at the back that accentuates the extraordinarily long finish"
