“Over the years, I have enjoyed some magical bottles from Chanterêves: wines with filigree tannins and hauntingly floral bouquets that captivate all the senses.” William Kelley, The Wine Advocate “Guillaume Bott and Tomoko have been doing wonderful things under their Chanterêves label... Beautiful wines whether made from Pinot, Chardonnay or Aligoté.” Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy “The wines are extremely pure, with an almost naked impression of the fruit. They are focused, transparent and crystal clear palate wise. They seem completely free from vinification makeup.” Steen Öhman, Winehog With a name that brings together the French for ‘sing’ and ‘dream’, it is apt that Chanterêves hits the high notes without making a big noise. They can leave that to the critics, such as The Wine Advocate’s William Kelley, who declares that Tomoko Kuriyami and Guillaume Bott have already “established themselves as an exciting presence on the Côte d’Or”. In a nutshell, the disarming Chanterêves style leans toward purity, finesse, and vineyard expression, with winemaking all but invisible. It is a perfect fit for 2021—a season Tomoko describes as a classical Burgundy vintage yielding wines of delicacy and finesse. A year of seemingly endless challenges offered up a tiny crop and some standout wines. The reds, reminiscent of the fresh and focused 2013s, are fine, transparent and fragrant, while the whites channel potent crystalline expression born from low yields of intensely concentrated fruit. Regardless of the year at Chanterêves, site and vintage expression take precedence over winemaking artifice. The whites are whole bunch-pressed and ferment in old oak vessels of varying sizes. The reds ferment as whole clusters in old wood, and are managed gently by hand or foot. Maturation for both colours takes place first in old barrels followed by a short stint in stainless steel. Every vintage, these artisanal methods lend themselves toward site-specific purity, finesse, and lithe structure. From the kind of vintage that is likely to become increasingly rare, lovers of pretty, classically styled Burgundy are in for a treat.
